“Modern Silence” by A Selfish Person
After well over a year, I have released a new song. It is an ambient track that I laid down the bones to several months ago and just recently added a couple finishing touches to and mastered. I came up with the concept to the song one night while listening to the artist Ancient Ocean, whom I am a big fan of and who has inspired my music a lot over the years. I was listening to one of his songs and thought to myself, ‘Almost all of these sounds could be made with a guitar.’ So I decided to try my hand at making my guitar sound distinctly not like a guitar, and I feel like I did a pretty decent job. Almost all the sounds you hear in this track were made with my Telecaster, then softened / crushed by reverb, delay, and other effects. There is also a layer of static / fuzz that was produced using my Nebulophone that received a similar reverb / delay treatment to help make the ambience a little more lush. Finally, there is a barely there drum beat using sampled bongos / congos that was then randomized, compressed down to 12-bits, and received the heaviest amount of reverb of any track in the song. Since Ancient Ocean was the main inspiration of this song, when I first titled the file in Ableton, I called it “Modern Ocean”. I didn’t really care for it as an actual title, so I sat there for a several minutes while uploading the song to Soundcloud before I decided to name it “Modern Silence”, which is the name of the band that I was in during my high school years. It felt right, for some reason.
Here is a link to the song. I hope you like it.
